A new woody specs site has come to my attention (sometime ago I’m afraid to say - before my “specation”). It’s Shwood. Check it. But - as opposed to previous sites and makers Spectacles Blog has drawn attention to before - I think this one only does sunglasses… Which means that everyone can shop there! (Unless you want prescription glasses or sunglasses - but you know what I mean.)

These seem to have more sensible prices than other woody specs. From £95 to £135 forpolarised. (Maybe - and I suspect -that they are machine made but so what if they look good.)

Urban Specs which I haven’t checked for awhile are still my favourites though - more original in my mind (and with a creative disobedience. See all the previous Spectacles Blog news on him by checking Urban Spectacles or searching for Urban Spectacles.

For the other guys’ wooden glasses frames use this search for Wooden Spectacles…

Do You Know What Spectacle Sizes Mean?

If you saw these numbers inside your spectacles - or someone else’s glasses for that matter, would you know what they meant? The numbers would be on the spectalces’ frame because they are specific to the frame.

54-20-140 Sometimes there’s a little square between the numbers like this □ but this is only really punctuation.

eye-bridge-temple glasses sixes

All numbers are in millimetres. The first number is the eye glass width of the frame (here 60) and the second number is the bridge (the width of the frame across the nose, here 20) and the third is the length of the temple or the arm (here 140).

However some people say the first number is the diameter (i.e diagonal measure across the lens. I don’t think that this makes sense because in the simple across measure you should be able to add two eyes to the bridge and find out the width.

The temple measurement is to the tip so this doesn’t help either, because it doesn’t say where your ear is - which is surely what counts.

So basically you don’t need or necessarily want to know these measures. Try them on! But then there’s the internet. well in that case the best thing would be to know what fits you already and buy the same sort of size.

The imortant thing is the pupillary distance which is another measure altogether - to which we’ll come back - and that’s what you really want because it effects where the lens goes in the frame (of whatever size) so that you look through the right bit of the lens.

NB Some places tell you the size of the total width of theframe because part of the temple can protrude - or the styling is that the width is greater than the eye+bridge+eye width.

But now that I’ve been to see In Style Sunglasses (dotcom), it seems amazing that they get away with it. The D&G replicas which are shown here are $15.50.

The site seems to promote the whole concept proudly using the word “replica” but the name “inspired” which is OK depending on [a] how close to the original is the design and [b] the use of the logo - or close “inspiration”. It’s in the States and I’m no lawyer so I guess they know what they are doing…

I can’t see any D&G shades that look quite like this so maybe the glasses designs are far enough away to not worry anyone.

I thought I’d better show them. But first apologies for the delay in putting them uphereon Spectacles Blog. There was no delay in the specs arriving but as you may see from the dates of the recent posts Spectacles Blog went into serious neglect for a while. I just got all specked out…

I took these pictures of someone else in the specs - my face just live up to being a glasses model! When you photograph them at a fairly straight on angle they almost disappear, which is the idea I guess. To see the rimof the rimless glass (if you see what I mean) you have to get an angle.

Whichever and whatever… pretty blooming good for £18. I use them for TV as that’s when other people look at me and “judge” my glasses. They like them.

Bad Spectacles Jokes:

It started recently when all the papers had Kelly Brook in her knickers for Specsavers: Every one had the “specs appeal” headline. Was that a phenomena of creativity or lazy journalism with the headline coming from the PR with the pictures and the sub imagining that headline would stand out - against the fifteen hundred identical ones!

So I wondered what the rest of the standards were in the spectacles archive of hilarity and bad word play.

I’m starting this now with two openers, one from the above and one new one

Specs appeal

Frame & fortune

Then I will be coming back to this subject with more examples - feel free to write in…

And then one day we’ll make the definitive spectacles pun book - meanwhile I’m going to put them allon the Specspert Page

NB I have the specspert .com and .co.uk domains registered - so I’ve got that one covered!

PS New one… Am I a “Specs Maniac” for being obsessed by spectacles?
