Premiere Optical who make wonderful spectacles frames – bespoke off-the-shelf or custom made glasses – have been asked to make these by the Royal Mint who are promoting their new £5 coin.  I’ve not seen the publicioty but managed to get hold of this picture of the special spectacles.  I wonder what they will do with them afterwards.

Of course Premiere Optical claim to be able to make just about anything in the spectacles line so these were a piece of cake. But like lenses made of cake – you can’t see through them…

This week is the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s shooting and death. RIP.

Yellow Submariner's Glasses

The man possibly most famous for his round National Health spectacles in fact wore many styles.  I quote from Opera Opera opticians on the details of the NHS specs…

"No, not those ones!"

“He is certainly best known for popularising the metal British National Health Service (NHS) style frames that at the time were manufactured by several companies. The design and the rolled gold (also sometimes termed ‘gold filled’) material was approved by an NHS committee. These frames were subsidised by the tax payer. Many archive photos show him wearing the NHS 422CJ (pantoscopic shape) with centre positioned joints…”

But nobody is going to their opticians to ask for the John Lennon spectacles that aren’t the round ones!
